The 5 Everyday Products I Would Swap First

(And what I would keep for now — no full home purge required.)

YOU DO NOT NEED TO REPLACE EVERYTHING. YOU JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO SWAP FIRST.

If you want a healthier home but don’t know where to start, this is the short version: five swaps, in the order I’d actually make them, with what to buy and what to leave alone until it’s worn out.

Check anything that’s true. Don’t research yet — just notice.

Cleaning & Laundry
Strong scent bothers me or someone home.
I’m running low on cleaner or detergent.
Kitchen & Bath
I reheat food often in plastic containers.
My cleanser or lotion is heavily fragranced.
01
All-Purpose Cleaner
The MoveChoose an EPA Safer Choice–certified cleaner; pick the Fragrance-Free designation if that matters to you.
Keep, use up, or replace? Use up an effective product safely — swap it in when the bottle is empty, not before.
02
Laundry Detergent
The MoveChoose a fragrance-free detergent with clear directions; EPA Safer Choice is a useful shortcut. Dose for your load size.
Keep, use up, or replace? Keep your current detergent if it works and doesn’t bother anyone — swap at your next refill.
03
Food Storage for Hot Meals
The MoveUse glass, ceramic, or stainless steel for hot food when practical. Microwave only in containers labeled for it.
Keep, use up, or replace? Keep intact plastic for cold/dry storage — only retire pieces that are warped, cracked, or badly scratched.
04
Body Wash or Bar Soap
The MoveChoose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser if your skin prefers simplicity. “Fragrance-free” and “unscented” aren’t always the same thing — read the label.
Keep, use up, or replace? Patch-test anything new, and swap at your next refill — not mid-bottle.
05
Sheets & Pillowcases
The MoveWhen replacement is truly needed, prioritize durable natural fibers. GOTS “Organic” means at least 95% certified organic fibers.
Keep, use up, or replace? Do not replace serviceable bedding just for this list — wait until end of useful life.

The “Do Not Purge” Box

Nothing above is a reason to empty a cabinet today. If it’s not empty, worn, damaged, or actively bothering you, it goes on your Later list — not the trash.

The Holistic Swap Label Decoder

Five cards to carry in your head next time you’re standing in an aisle deciding what “clean” actually means.

The Holistic Swap Filter — Need + evidence + fit + budget + ease. If a purchase fails any two of these, pause.
EPA Safer Choice
Verifies

Every intentionally added ingredient meets EPA program criteria. The Fragrance-Free mark has added requirements.

Doesn’t decide

Your personal tolerance, scent preference, or whether you actually need the product.

GOTS (Textiles)
Verifies

“Organic” = 95%+ certified organic fiber. “Made with Organic Materials” = 70%+, plus supply-chain requirements.

Doesn’t decide

Comfort, durability, exact fit, or whether you actually need to replace it yet.

“Fragrance-Free” vs. “Unscented”
60-second check

Don’t assume they’re interchangeable. “Unscented” can still contain masking fragrance materials — look for a verified fragrance-free claim if that’s what you need.

FDA Use Directions
Verifies

Whether a container is labeled microwave-safe and food-contact appropriate.

Doesn’t decide

That every plastic item must be thrown out — intact, correctly-used plastic can stay in rotation.

Marketing Word vs. Real Certification
60-second check

“Natural,” “clean,” “green,” and “eco-friendly” aren’t regulated terms. Look for the exact certification name, label grade, and current status before you trust the word on the front of the package.

Treat these as marketing language until a real certification backs them up:

“Natural” — undefined by any single regulated standard.
“Clean” / “Green” / “Eco-Friendly” — meaningless without a named certification behind it.
“Chemical-Free” / “Detoxing” — everything is made of chemicals; treat sweeping claims like these as a reason to pause, not buy.
